Emerald Hollow Mine is the only emerald mine in the world open to the public for prospecting. Tucked in the foothills of theBrushy Mountains in Hiddenite, North Carolina, it’s also the only place in the world geologists say you can find true hiddenite.
Never heard of hiddenite? Don’t worry. It is the fourth-rarest gemstone out there. This unique pale-to-emerald green variety of spodumene is naturally colored with chromium. Hiddenite is also said to be the only gemstone that can’t be recreated by man or synthesized.
However, the rare beauty isn’t the only precious gem or mineral found at the mine. In fact, there are more than 60 varieties of naturally-occurring gems and minerals on site!
Visitors are likely to find emerald, topaz, sapphire, citrine, aquamarine and amethyst—just to name a few. Plus, Emerald Hollow Mine is home to a solid collection of smoky and clear quartz crystals as well.
Plan your visit
The easiest way to prospect at the mine is by sluicing. It may sound complicated, but it’s actually simple! You’ll purchase a bucket. Then you’ll find a seat at the sluice way and start washing away dirt.
